How is Money Different without Children with Bri Conn - 166

This week's Money Talk

This week's Money Buddy

Bri Conn is the Chief Experience Officer of Childfree Wealth®, a life and financial planning firm dedicated to helping Childfree and Permanently Childless people. She is also a Childfree Wealth Specialist® and the co-host of the Childfree Wealth podcast.

What Opportunities Does Not Having Kids Allow People With Their Money?

Not having kids unlocks a level of financial flexibility that can open up so many different opportunities. Without the financial responsibility of raising children, you have the freedom to live where you want, spend how you want, and plan for your future in a way that aligns with your goals. Maybe you’re choosing to rent instead of buying a home in a specific school district. Maybe you’re traveling more or taking advantage of job opportunities without worrying about uprooting a family.

For my wife and me, this has meant we don’t feel pressured to buy a house right away, which has reduced a lot of financial stress. And if you do plan to have kids later, understanding these financial opportunities now can help you plan intentionally for the future.

2. How Can You Have Healthy Money Talks With Everyone In Your Life?

One of the biggest things Bri emphasized is that money assumptions can create tension—especially when it comes to family. If you’re child-free, people might assume you’ll be the one to take care of aging parents or that you have extra money to spare. The key to avoiding uncomfortable conversations down the road? Talk about money early.

Setting clear boundaries and expectations before an issue arises makes it easier for everyone. Have a conversation with your family about financial responsibilities so there aren’t any surprises when big decisions come up. If you need a place to start, I have a free resource to help—check out the 7 Money Talking Points on my website!

3. How Could FILE Work for You? (Financial Independence, Live Early)

You’ve probably heard of FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early), but FILE is all about designing a life you love now, not just waiting until the traditional retirement age. If you’re financially stable and don’t have kids, you can adjust your work-life balance to fit what you want. Maybe that means cutting back to part-time, taking a sabbatical, or switching careers to something that fulfills you rather than just chasing a paycheck.

Instead of waiting for some far-off retirement goal, FILE helps you make intentional choices that let you enjoy life sooner rather than later. And the best part? It’s completely customizable to what makes sense for you!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on these money topics. Hit “reply” and let me know!

Enjoy your week and get out there and have a money talk!
